The Response CD Release
2-10-2017
Sprouting from the soil of a wooded Boston suburb, "The Response" began as a casual neighborhood pick-up band that unexpectedly bloomed into something glorious. Unusual instrumentation, thought-provoking lyrics, and rich vocal harmonies create a live performance that is energetic and uplifting.
The core of the band’s music germinates through Jic Davis and the hypnotic sound of his “batar” (an electric guitar/bass hybrid instrument). Using a combination of tapping and strumming techniques, this instrument weaves a web of root-rumbling lows and sparkling highs. Vocalist Emilie Faucher fronts the band with authenticity, powerful poetic lyrics, and a magnetic open-hearted energy. Mac Ritchey brings an unusual instrument to the mix, the electric oud. This modern imagining of the ancient Arabic lute is routed through guitar pedals, effects, and a looping device, creating synthesizer-like textures and sonic atmospheres. Percussionist Jon Golden anchors the quintet with a rock steady groove and stylistic versatility, while guitarist Davidson Powell’s melodic playing and colorful support are a perfect match for this song-driven ensemble.
Drawing on a vast range of influences, their music is unconventional yet familiar, with catchy melodic hooks and nods to classic music of the 70’s and 80’s. Forged from friendship, trust, and community, The Response is proud to be sharing the music and magic that stems from such an endeavor with old friends and new faces on this celebratory evening at the Bull Run with the release of their full-length debut studio recording.
