NVCoC Instant Survey Results on Transportation Funding Bill - April 12, 2013
Below are the results from Wednesday's member survey of the Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce (NVCoC). This 12 hour instant survey shows an overwhelming percentage of our members favor reform before revenue.
This information was shared with NVCoC area Legislators as a courtesy of the NVCoC.
Of 75 total respondents:
49% selected option D (I think more needs to be done to enact reforms in state government and spend money more efficiently, and when that is done, if more money is needed, then I would support an increase in state taxes.)
25% selected option A (I do not think any taxes should be increased because state government should live within its means and taxpayers already pay enough.)
17% selected option B (I agree with Governor Patrick's proposal to increase taxes by $1.9 billion in order to fund needed transportation improvements and expansion, as well as to fund increased availability of early childhood education.)
5% selected option C (I think the governor's proposal goes too far, but I do support the $500 million tax increase to fund transportation projects that has passed the House of Representatives and is now before the State Senate.)

MA new mulch fire-safety regulation - 09/25/12
© Murphy Insurance Agency
Every so often a new law goes into effect without getting a lot of press. On September 1, 2012, a new Massachusetts Mulch Fire-Safety Regulation became law. This regulation is in response to a number of large building fires in recent years, which involved mulch being close to a building being ignited.
The law impacts building owners and prohibits the placement of mulch within 18 inches from a building's walls. (NOTE: Residential buildings with less than six units are exempt.) The law also specifies placement restrictions for piles of mulch on a property.
We want you to be aware of this law so that if it applies to you, you can take steps to be in compliance. The article link below contains more information as well as additional links to the state regulations.
Here's the Dirt on MA's New Mulch Fire-Safety Regulation
Your local fire department is probably your best resource if you have specific questions.

Small Businesses Lead the Way in Green Technology Innovation
By Office of Economic Impact and Diversity
It should come as no surprise that small businesses are leading the way in green technology innovation - and the statistics back that up. The Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy released a report today that analyzed small business innovation and patents in the field of green technology, studying the difference between small and large firms.
The results are clear - while small firms hold about 8 percent of all U.S. patents, they have 14 percent of the green technology patents. These include over 32 percent of patents in smart grids and solar energy, and 15 percent of the total batteries and fuel cell patents. Moreover, the report found that small innovative firms are 16 times more productive than large innovative firms when you look at patents per employee. Additionally, their patents are cited 2.5 times more than their large counterparts.
