With six months to go before the primary election in September, the large group of Democat candidates seeking U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas's seat will stake out their positions in two debates scheduled in Fitchburg and Devens in May and June, respectively.
The debates are being organized by The Sun of Lowell, Sentinel and Enterprise of Fitchburg, and Nashoba Valley Voice in partnership with Fitchburg State University and Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce.
The first debate will take place Wednesday, May 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at FSU, a co-sponsor with the newspapers. Candidates will be asked to focus on domestic issues, including the economy, immigration, education and national security.
A second debate, co-sponsored with NVCoC, will follow on Tuesday, June 5 starting at 10 a.m. at the Devens Commerce Center. The focus will be on foreign affairs, including trade, treaties and military defense.
The public is invited to attend.
All 13 Democrats running for U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas' seat have committed to participate in both debates ahead of the Sept. 4 Democratic primary
"The race for the 3rd Congressional District seat affects one of Massachusetts most diverse population centers and has attracted an equally interesting and diverse group of candidates," said James Campanini, the editor of all three papers. "We are delighted to highlight the candidates and issues so citizens can make an informed decision when they cast a ballot in the Democrat primary."
