Clinton VFW Post to Hold Rededication Ceremony Honoring Local Iwo Jima Veteran
The Clinton Veterans of Foreign Wars is excited to announce that it will be rededicating VFW Post 523 in honor of Corporal Walter “Miz” O’Malley in a special ceremony to be held on Sunday, June 23 at 2pm. The general public is invited to this event.
Corporal O’Malley, 93, is a native of Clinton who courageously served in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the Fifth Marine Division during the Second World War. He has since resided in Clinton, where he and his wife Teresa raised four children, worked at A&P supermarkets, and held every office of the Clinton Turners with the exception of treasurer.
The Clinton VFW renaming ceremony is a part of a broader effort to recognize the sacrifices and bravery of what has become known as The Greatest Generation.
“Corporal O’Malley’s service as a Marine in one of our nation’s most significant and pivotal battles is a valuable example of the sacrifice that goes into preserving our democracy, “ Said Representative Harold Naughton, who is co-facilitating the event with the Clinton VFW. “We hope to express our gratitude for his exceptional bravery while also inspiring future generations to follow his example, whether it be joining the armed forces or engaging in community service.”
The June 23rd event is expected to bring Marines, veterans, and dignitaries from across the nation in recognition of Corporal O’Malley’s life and service.
