    On Top of the World
Isabel, 17, embraces animal-assisted therapy at Rein in a Dream (RIAD)

Isabel sits in the barn office before her lesson with Lily the horse, petting Penguin, a black and white tuxedo cat, who never leaves Isabel’s gaze. They have a clear connection, as Isabel does with Lily and most animals she meets. Penguin and Lily came to Perkins around the same time as Isabel, just under one year ago.

Isabel is a residential student at Perkins and visits RIAD three times a week as a part of her Individualized Education Program (IEP). She works with horses, small animals, and performs general barn duties. Creating a routine and working at the barn helps Isabel get through other days of the week that might be more challenging. The program helps Isabel to navigate her anxiety, grow her skills, and regulate her emotions by understanding how her disposition affects the animals that she works with.

Karen Jordan, Assistant Program Manager at RIAD, works with Isabel during her lessons and says that Isabel has a “magic touch” with the animals and has gained increased awareness of her own emotions through her connection with them.
