    Scams Targeting Residents in BBB's Service Area Include the Utility Impostor Scam
    Residents in BBB of Central New England's service area reported 24 instances of fraud on the BBB Scam Tracker, including three instances of a utility impostor scam, a significant advance fee loan scam case, two reports of scams originating from their CraigsList postings, and a fake-check/secret-shopper scam report, during the month of October.
    • Residents of West Bolyston, Lunenburg, and Shrewsbury said they received a phone call offering a discount on their Eversource electric bill. In two of the reports, the residents said they are not Eversource customers.
    • Two residents, one from Paxton and the other from Putnam, Conn., reported pet scams.
    • One Worcester resident reported losing $4,770 in an advance fee loan scam and another reported being the target of a fake-check/secret-shopper scam.
    • Two residents of Oxford and Chester who were selling vehicles on CraigsList reported being contacted by a potential buyer who asked them to run a vehicle-history report using an unfamiliar website.
