    Event Description:
Fort Devens Museum Talk Focuses on Military Buttons

Military uniforms feature a bit of history in their array of patches and emblems signifying a soldier’s rank, unit, years of service, campaigns involved in, and medals awarded. Uniforms also display a set of buttons which, even if they may be the same for an entire branch of the service, are of historical note.
The 1:00 PM Saturday September 16th talk at the Fort Devens Museum focuses on such buttons  from many wars and different countries’ armies.  Guest speaker bringing this segment of military history alive will be Marie Elwyn, a Shirley resident. She will be displaying military buttons from as far back as the Napoleonic era.  For good measure she’ll display some railroad and street railway buttons as well. She encourages people to bring their own buttons that they have collected, and she will also offer some buttons for sale.
Elwyn is a member of the National button Society, a director of the Massachusetts Button Society, and a founder in 2008 of the Shirley Button Club. She is also serving her fifth year as President of the Shirley Historical Society.
This program is part of the museum’s celebration marking the centenary of Camp and Fort Devens. Light refreshments will be served. Program is free but donations are appreciated.  The Fort Devens Museum, open to the public from 10 AM to 3 PM on that day, September 16th, is located on the 3rd floor at 94 Jackson Road, Devens, MA. The building is wheelchair accessible. For more information about this event please call 978-772-1286 or email info@fortdevensmuseum.org.
