Brighten Your October with Programs in Shirley
Everyone enjoys a good story told with feeling. So plan to visit the historic Shirley Meeting House for “Stories and Tall Tales” on Saturday, October 13 at 6:30pm with gifted storytellers Mark Jeffreys and Mary Ellen Jones. Mark will perform The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven, by Sherman Alexie, and an original story entitled The Men in Mary B’s Life. Mary Ellen will share legends of the Native American Abenaki tribe, Gluskabi and the Wind Eagle and Gluskabi and the Game Animals. And if you have a poem or story you’d like to share, the floor will be open for 4-5 readings – just touch base with Holly in advance at (978) 425-0056.
Then return to the Meeting House on Sunday, October 21 at 4pm when Ensemble Lyrae will present “Expressions of Light and Dark” with works by Felix Mendelssohn, Zoltán Kodály, Gustav Holst, Adam Guettel, Ola Gjeilo, and many more. Inspired by the natural beauty and brilliance of the constellation Lyra, Ensemble Lyrae brings together four vocalists and a pianist. While each shines as a soloist, together these women form deep connections with duets, trios, and quartets. The Meeting House is located at 41 Brown Road in Shirley. Suggested donation for attending these events is $15, with proceeds supporting the ongoing preservation and restoration of the historic Meeting House.
And finally, get in the Halloween spirit on Saturday, October 27th at 6:30pm with a family-fun gathering on the Common in Shirley Center. Featured will be magic by Stephanie Beach at the Meeting House, a “spooky room” and snacks at the Center Town Hall and a Ghost Walk on the Common. Admission for this special event sponsored by the Center Town Hall Committee is $5, with kids 3 and under free.
